2 Week Old Baby - What Your Baby's Doing: Diary Of A New Mum

Congratulations mommy and daddy! By now you're already home with your new bundle.

Of course it's going to be the same constant routine of feeding, burping, pooping, cleaning, feeding, burping, putting to sleep, feeding, burping.....and continued in the same manner.

But now, there are a few additions that your new baby will be learning:

By 2 weeks, your baby's reflexes start to grow stronger. She will of course be suckling a lot, and most of the time her mouth will be making a sucking motion.

She will be opening her eyes more than she was doing earlier, and try and look around for your nipple (being honest here momma!). She'll also be moving her head from side to side a lot, trying to find the nipple.

Your baby will start understanding her surroundings more, even if she can't really show it, so start talking to her and interacting.

Baby will start recognising your voice.

This is a great time to develop touch bonding between baby and you, so do all you can. Hold baby, massage, cuddle, kiss, stroke baby's hair, carry baby in your arms, do all you can to create more of the bonding.

Your baby should be sleeping a lot. Most babies will do it without any stress. In our case, we've had sleep issues with both our daughters. One great way to try and get them to sleep better and for longer is by making sure they're properly swaddled. Trust me, it works. Swaddle your baby comfortably and securely. This will give baby a sense of security and baby won't get scared while sleeping and wake up.

Your baby's bath time will be a first of its kind experience for the new one, and a stressful and difficult one for you, especially if this is a first baby. Don't worry. The initial few weeks can be a little tough, but soon, bath times are going to be fun times, something you will be looking forward to as well.

Baby's nails are sharp and long. But really tine! The best way to avoid baby scratching herself is by putting her in mittens. We clipped our baby's nails later.

Colic:
This is also the time when baby will start showing signs of colic, if baby is colicy. If your baby cries for longer periods of time non-stop, without any reason, or if she is uncomfortable for a length of time and only seems to be crying without any obvious reasons and despite you having tried everything, chances are, she has colic. Remember, colic has nothing to do about how you are as a parent. It's a normal situation and almost 20% of babies have colic. If your baby has colic, it's a matter of about 2-3 months, and everything will ease out by then. So don't stress out.

About mommy:
You're still bleeding, and the bleeding may actually be heavy during this stage. This is nothing to worry. If you're getting overly uncomfortable, you can talk to your gynae about it. You're most likely scheduled for a visit around this time.

You may also be going through nipple sensitivity. I didn't have any issues with my first born, but this time round, it was quite painful and uncomfortable. If you're constantly uncomfortable and in pain, talk to your doctor about it.
