Cleaning Your Infant's Ear: Diary of A New Mum

As most doctors will say, it's not advisable to put anything anywhere in your baby - at all! One of your first concerns regarding this may be cleaning your little one's ears.

An infant's ear is one of the most delicate and trickiest parts to try and clean, one that can be quite dangerous if you're not careful.

REMEMBER:  NEVER PUT ANY CLEANING DEVICE INSIDE YOUR BABY'S EAR This
could potentially harm baby and cause permanent hearing problems. If you're seeing ear wax in your little one's ears, don't worry right away. Ear wax build-up is one of the most natural ways of protecting your newborn's ear canal and unless it's causing pain to the little one or is so thick that you can't look in, you don't really need to remove it.

The best way to go about this is to check with your baby's doctor at the next appointment. Most doctors will help clean up any earwax buildup in the first few instances. Ask them to show you how, so that next time you can do it yourself, provided you're sure you can do it safely and gently enough.

If you really want to clean baby's ears at home, a few simple and safe ways to do so are:
  • moisten a Q-tip/ear bud with water and gently use it to clean the outer area of baby's ear
  • using a moist cloth wrapped around your baby finger, gently wipe the outer surface of baby's ear
  • put a tiny bit of baby oil on a cotton swab/cotton ball and wipe the outer area of baby's ear
